Discarded flashlight prompts three hour police search

A flashlight in the Thames River led police on a wild goose chase Monday night (Nov. 14).

Police say they received a complaint of people having a bonfire by the riverbank near Carfrae Street, between Richmond and Ridout streets.

When police arrived on scene the suspects were gone, leaving behind clothes, a chair, alcohol and drug paraphernalia, London Police Service Const. Denis Rivest said.

Rivest said the discovery of a lit flashlight in the river, however, prompted police and firefighters to spend three hours searching the riverbank area, from 8  to 11 p.m.

Nothing was found in the search.
